It is my great privilege to have acted as leading counsel in the Singapore Courts seeking Teo Soh Lung’s release from her arbitrary detention without trial. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my professional life.
Like my friend and colleague, the late Lord Alexander QC, who took my place when I was banned from representing her again, I failed to secure her freedom from her long period of solitary confinement as a prisoner of conscience, and she suffered greatly for her defence of freedom of the press and the independence of the legal profession.
Soh Lung is a woman of outstanding integrity and remarkable courage. Her book deserves to be read by everyone who cares for free speech and justice under the rule of law. It is an inspiring testament to liberty, and a warning against public indifference to attacks upon civil and political rights.
