About the Speaker
Dr Poh Soo Kai is a medical doctor. In 1961 while working as an intern in Kandang Kerbau Maternity Hospital, he was awarded a post‐graduate scholarship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the UK. However, he gave up the opportunity to advance his career when he resigned from government service in order to enter politics. Together with Dr Lim Hock Siew, he established Rakyat Clinic on Balestier Road.
On 2 February 1963, Dr Poh and more than 150 other Barisan Sosialis
members and trade unionists were arrested under the Preservation of
Public Security Ordinance. At the time of his arrest, he was the Vice
Secretary of Barisan Sosialis. Released on 13 December 1973, he joined
Dr. Abu Bakar at Rakyat Clinic. Dr Poh was re‐arrested on 4 June 1976
and released on 26 August 1982. He had thus spent a total of 17 years in prison without trial.
