Appearing on television

Between 31 May and 7 June, ISD officers hinted that I would soon be released. I was told of the possible restrictive orders that would be imposed on me when I was released. I was told that when I was released, I would have to undertake not to take part in politics, resign from the council of the Law Society of which I was a member and resign from all activities in the Law Society. My immediate reaction was one of anger. I wasn’t too concerned about politics but I was angry that I had to give up my activities in the Law Society.

As if those conditions were not bad enough, I was informed on or about 8 June that I would have to appear on television. My appearance would determine whether I would be released within the 30-day period of detention allowed under the ISA for investigation purposes or continue to be detained for a maximum of two years (renewable before expiry) under the same Act. A day before I was told that I was required to appear on television, Sim told me that the government was looking “at the whole affair very seriously.” I did not understand his remark.
